After a short period of beta testing, Twitter has unveiled its much talked about “lists” feature for all users this week.
What are Twitter lists?
Twitter lists are simply user created lists of other users. They work in much the same way as friend lists work on Facebook. I can create a list for fellow Indians and Bruins fans, a list of official team accounts, a list of college friends, etc. Users can opt to publish these lists right on Twitter, thereby allowing other users to follow everyone on the list with one click.
Sports fans are already creating hundreds of lists of different Twitter users everyday. We at Sportsin140.com made our first list on Friday of all 30 NHL teams on Twitter. Look for more lists coming soon.
So, what do lists mean for sports fans on Twitter? Well lists will make it easier to find fellow fans from your favorite teams. They will also make it easier to find athletes on Twitter as fans list players from their favorite teams. One thing that lists won’t do is they won’t make it easier to know which athlete Twitter accounts are legitimate. Count on Sportsin140.com to remain your source for confirming athlete Twitter accounts. For now enjoy Twitter’s new lists feature and please post any interesting lists you come across in the comments section here.
We were featured in The Tennessean in an article about Nashville-based athletes that use Twitter. Here’s a link to the complete story by John Glennon.
For those that don’t know, I also list confirmed fake Twitter accounts as part of my Sports on Twitter directory and this website.
What constitutes a confirmed fake account? If I’ve already identified a legitimate account for the athlete in question, I know all others are fake. If I contact the team or organization and they inform me that the athlete is not on Twitter, I know the account is a fake. If the account is clearly labeled as a parody, I know it is a fake.
Some notables from the confirmed fakes list include:
- Eli Manning
- Terry Francona
- Manny Ramirez
- Martin Brodeur
- Evan Longoria
- Kobe Bryant
None of these people have official Twitter accounts at this time!
How to access the complete list of fake athlete Twitter accounts:
- Click the “Complete List” tab at the top of the screen
- Scroll down until you see the different pages for each sport at the bottom of the embedded spreadsheet
- Hold (do not click) your mouse over the little arrows in the bottom right hand corner
- Scroll all the way to the right and you will see the fakes page
Please note that I will be moving the fakes page to its own page on this website as I transition all the pages from the current embedded spreadsheet over to their own individual pages.
You’ll notice that my current list of fakes isn’t very large. That’s because I try to identify the longstanding fakes, the accounts with the most followers, and the ones that “seem” legitimate. Admittedly I prefer to work identifying legitimate accounts and adding those to my directory rather than adding confirmed fakes but I know people benefit from both types of listings.
